It's seldom you come across a car mechanic as reliable and as trustworthy as Matt at Ilkeston Garage. Over the years he has saved me a fortune with his honest advice and speedy service. I can't recommend highly enough and I'm always pushing friends and family to take their cars here. On the one occasion I did take my car to the main dealer last year, here's what happened: This is what happened after I took my car in for repair. This review is based on the servicing side. For routine maintenance, they appear to be proficient enough but give them a slightly more difficult task and in my case at least they failed miserably. Without going into too much detail, I was quoted a new ECU £2200 fitted which, I was told, may not adequately fix the problem and may need new manifolds too £2000! Not willing to risk this amount of cash on a fix which I didn't believe was the actual fault I took the car to another garage for a second opinion. They diagnosed, correctly, a faulty turbo and I subsequently gave them the job of sorting it out costing about £1000. Had I left it with Variava they would eventually have discovered the true fault but not before charging me £4000+ for unneeded parts. After complaining to them with all the details they agreed to refund half my diagnostic charges whilst not admitting any liability which I accepted as I didn't want the hassle of taking this further. Their customer facing staff are well trained and polite, their mechanical diagnostic abilities leave a lot to be desired and I would avoid with all but the most routine service requirements. EDIT: Of course the "Other garage" is Ilkeston Garage, I'd trust Matt to do anything car related, I wouldn't trust any main dealer, they will charge rip off prices and really don't give a toss about the customers unless they are towing a large suitcase full of cash with them and have zero knowledge of their car and how it works.!
